I’m still on break. I don’t go back until the 28th….so I’ve been doing a bunch of things.

In no particular order:

I took apart an old tower so I can upgrade the computer and make it awesome for gaming/fun

BTW this comp is so old it has a floppy drive!

Made a blanket fort (and learned I’m not very good at them)

Cleaned my room and found random stuff

Like old sketches….

and my old foreign coin collection

I’m the kind of person that gets really excited and then kind of jumps at any opportunity, before really thinking about it. But I’ve learned a valuable lesson about that. As you know, I had a wonderful summer job that I enjoyed and learned a lot in. It was fun, paid well and plenty of hours. Unfortunately, they only have the excess of hours during the summer months because the children who go to get tutored have to go to school. I knew I would have a spot during breaks/summer vacation, but I did not have anything part time during the school year, which I really wanted. 

I’ve learned the lesson the hard way about not jumping at an opportunity before I’ve had time to think it through. A manager from another center contacted me just after labor day and offered me a part-time/full-time position. However, this was in New York and I would have had to take the train because my family does not let me go on the highway with my car (long story, but it’s not my fault). Initially I was very excited and told the manager yes. Then I thought about it and calculated how much of my paycheck would go to the train ticket and I was like “this is not a good plan” and had to call the manager back and decline the offer. I was so excited and desperate for a job that I was not looking at what was best for me before I said yes. Because what is a job if it does not work for you hours/pay wise (or convenience wise)? That was pretty disappointing and you would have thought I had learned my lesson, but nope.

So I’ve mentioned my friend Emily a couple of times. We met at school and we’re pretty close. We kind of bonded over not having power with Hurricane Sandy and stuff. You know how it is, one moment you’re kind of close to someone and the next you’re super close. It just kind of happens. Anyway, so her dad owns a store and the first time I went over her dad’s house he was talking about how he needs a woman’s touch there because the only people that are there right now are men. I was not thinking about working at that point because school was still in full swing and I had a lot going on with Anatomy and Physiology plus my other 2 classes. Then a month or so later Emily was talking about how she has an interview at this place. Maybe I just got sucked into the fact that she is going to have a job (because she just started yesterday the 6th) or I get greedy. I don’t really know. But we’re talking about the place she’s working at, and she said I could probably get hours there if I wanted to interview and stuff. But I don’t really want to work there because I feel like I’d have to give up my summer job and this job does not pay as well. My summer job pays so well that I want to get something comparable if I’m going to cut ties there completely. Anyway, Emily and I were talking about places I could possibly apply to and I think I mentioned her dad’s store (because the pay would be comparable to what I was already making). She said that’s definitely a possibility because he knows me/likes me and we would just have to talk to him about it. One thing led to another and she made it sound like it was a done deal. Or maybe I just assumed that. Either way, when my summer job contacted me to see if I was available at all during my winter break I told them no because I thought I would be working for Emily’s dad. I had a bad feeling about it, but I thought it would be a done deal and I figured I would be working full time during the winter break anyway so it was not a big deal.

Well, I was wrong and I should have just told the summer job I was available during the entire 2 weeks surrounding Xmas and New Years. Because when the store came up again Emily’s dad said I would not start until after January 1st. Then last Thursday, I visited the store and talked with her dad. Everything just kind of fell through. It was a mess. He was basically like “Look, I know you’d be good here, but you’re friends with my daughter and I have concerns she would take whatever you tell her from working here outside and cause problems for the business (because she’s a really nice girl, but she’s kind of a drama queen).” Then he told me winter break is really slow, so he would not be able to offer me a job until February 1st and to call him in 2 weeks and see where we stand. 

I think I’ve learned my lesson now, and unless I feel 110% sure about any other job opportunities I have to be smart and just take what has been given to me. At least for right now, it just must not be meant to be that I work part time during the school year. Makes sense considering that if I get into the nursing program it is very rigorous and most people do not work more than 20 hours a week because they have to study so much. I guess it’s frustrating for me because I want to be able to do things with my friends and whatnot, but I guess I just have to budget better this coming summer or whenever I do finally get some income.

Now my plans for winter break are to try to get ahead in my anatomy reading/studying for this semester. Even if I only finish the chapter on the Endocrine system, that helps me, right? And I guess now I’m definitely going to be getting up early everyday to try to fit all the stuff I want to do in. I’m supposed to possibly hang out with my friend Bethany today….so we’ll see if she texts me back or not. I have a feeling it’s not going to be until later anyway since she’s the type of person that tends to get up really late.
