  • Is death a dream if life is a dream? Freewrite/Ramble

One of the classes I’m observing at my internship watched the movie Waking Life. It’s trippy movie with lots of interesting philosophical stuff. It explores the idea that people may be not truly be living and may be dreaming through their life. I only saw half of it…so I couldn’t tell you the whole deal.

I’m going to direct you to a trailer.

Anyway, I participated in the freewrite along with the rest of the class.

I don’t think life is a dream. I mean, we are fortunate enough to just be here, and I think the fact that we’re here is enough. We may never know if we are in comes and just dreaming through our lives, but what is the point of thinking that way? Coma or not we are here. We are all, of course, entitled to our beliefs about why we are here. I think that differs greatly from whether or not life is a dream though. I believe we’re here to do the best that we can with the resources we are given, and rely on God when we fall short (which is always). Kind of going back to the dream idea—We can’t live our lives obsessed with the ideas that we are not actually physically here. It seems to me that it could drive a person crazy. We have to put even the slightest amount of faith in the idea that we are 100% here, physically and emotionally present here on Earth. Otherwise, what is the point?

  • Read Sophie’s World, if you have a chance.

  • @dingus6 - I actually started it recently..I can’t really get into it :(

  • So set it aside and try it again in a year or two. Life’s to short to be reading novels you don’t enjoy!

Main Street, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Outsiders, The Bell Jar, and To Kill a Mockingbird were popular when I was in high school.
