  • Is death a dream if life is a dream? Freewrite/Ramble

One of the classes I’m observing at my internship watched the movie Waking Life. It’s trippy movie with lots of interesting philosophical stuff. It explores the idea that people may be not truly be living and may be dreaming through their life. I only saw half of it…so I couldn’t tell you the whole deal.

I’m going to direct you to a trailer.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iDAaS3QiNk

    Better quality http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk2DeTet98o&NR=1

Anyway, I participated in the freewrite along with the rest of the class.

I don’t think life is a dream. I mean, we are fortunate enough to just be here, and I think the fact that we’re here is enough. We may never know if we are in comes and just dreaming through our lives, but what is the point of thinking that way? Coma or not we are here. We are all, of course, entitled to our beliefs about why we are here. I think that differs greatly from whether or not life is a dream though. I believe we’re here to do the best that we can with the resources we are given, and rely on God when we fall short (which is always). Kind of going back to the dream idea—We can’t live our lives obsessed with the ideas that we are not actually physically here. It seems to me that it could drive a person crazy. We have to put even the slightest amount of faith in the idea that we are 100% here, physically and emotionally present here on Earth. Otherwise, what is the point?

  • Senior Prom!!!! :) (This includes pictures)

    So, yesterday was prom.

I left school at about 1:40 (I talked to someone till like 1:50), got my nails done and went home.

I got ready; meaning that I attempted to put on make up from the small collection that I have

My friend date Beau, (yes, completely platonic date yada yada) was kind of late picking me up, so I freaked out a bit…Anyway, then we went to my friend (err, kinda friend) Shannon’s house where everyone was meeting before the bus picked them up.

We took lots of pictures, which is to be expected (I have like 60 pictures combined in my prom album between mine and my Mom’s pictures). Beau’s parents took a bajillion photos as well. He wasn’t lying when he said they were big photo people though. They seemed nice enough though.

Anyway, since Beau’s parents were kind of late the bus came and we didn’t have much other time to spare since the bus came and we had to get going. We weren’t taking the bus, but they open the doors to prom at 7 and close them at 8, so it doesn’t pay to fuzt and whatnot.

The actual prom was fairly uneventful, to say the least.

Since we got there just a little after 7 they had not yet opened the ballroom. We were supposed to veg, hang out, and mingle for an hour. It was kind of exciting because I got to meet my friend Ed’s girlfriend. She lives in another state, so she’s basically been like “the mysterious person” we’ve heard a lot about and whatnot.

So, literally for most of prom….I sat waiting for my food (I had to special order as a vegan) for an hour and a half or so. Then, here’s the kicker, I FINALLY get it. Guess what it is? A chunk of salmon (yes, SALMON) and a pitiful pile of veggies. I honestly am in humor at this situation. I pick at the veggies, try to call one of the hotel staff over, he brushes me off. Needless to say that sets the stage for later in the night.

I also played spit (though i think that it was a screwy version…eh whatever), and had more people been interested I would have tried to play president (obviously not with drinking…though I only know how to play it with cards anyway).

Then, after eating literally two carrots, I danced a little.

Prom was basically over after that.

I had fun, even though it was kind of odd.

A lot of my friends wanted to go to McDonalds after prom, but since I really had not eaten I wanted to go somewhere I could actually eat at. Instead, I went with my date to a local diner, got awesome vegan pizza. I really enjoy talking and spending time with that kid, so it was fun.

Just as a random related sidenote…I feel like I have come a long way. I have a pretty decent sized group of guy friends and I am not pursuing/thinking about pursuing romantic relationships with any of them. I had a problem with that more recently, and I’m just glad I’ve been blessed with getting beyond that…So yeah, yay for guy friends.

Anyway, here are a couple pictures.

  • Xanga Cribs

I tried to upload this as a xanga video, but it wouldn’t let me, so yay youtube.

Anyway, I did two takes of this. I personally like take 2 better, but watch both for kicks if you want.

ALSO, I didn’t really talk that loud, so you’ll probably need to turn the volume up, SORRY!

    Take 1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1borGFdqpQ

    Take 2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pDEIO1iWI8

Like I said, ask me questions if you want. Eg: Is there a story behind that item or something….Or I could just do a general question video? I dunno.

  • Are you a vegetarian or vegan? Why or why not? If so, what made you choose this lifestyle?

    I am vegan :) .

I became vegan almost 4 years ago because I saw Peta’s “Meet your Meat” video, among some of their other ones. I also became vegan because I wanted to lower my risk for heart disease/cancers/etc. High cholesterol also runs in my family.

I now know Peta is really sketchy and overzealous. People have also told me that the conditions videotaped in “Meet your Meat” and other videos that depict animals suffering in slaughterhouses are not real/or are exaggerated. If this is the case, then so be it. I am one of those people that tends to stick in certain ruts for awhile unless I really see a reason to change. Being vegan doesn’t hurt me or other people, so I really see nothing wrong with it even if animals are treated well in slaughterhouses…. if I’m not mean/pushy about it. I respect everyone’s choice to be how they want to be :) .

  • Lately I’ve been watching various Muslim/non-Muslim hijaabi’s videos on youtube. I’ve come to a few conclusions after all of the videos watched/listened to. I especially admire the hijaab and the reasons for wearing it. I, myself, am even considering wearing it (the only thing really stopping me is my mom/college in general because I feel like it would be really hard to sleep and stuff if my roommate brings boys home or something…it’s complicated).

However, there is something that comes up in my mind whenever I think about wearing/people who wear the hijaab.

Doesn’t wearing the hijaab cause some parts of the body to become overtly over sexualized? I would imagine no, but I have no idea. It’s just something I’ve been thinking about.

Does covering up a body part not give it a certain sense of shamefulness? I’m not sure if this applies to hijaab or not, but I do think it is worth thinking about.

Women cover their breasts and vagina area. At least in America, breastfeeding is kind of stigmatized. Few women really have an indication of what is actually “normal” in terms of breasts/vaginas etc. I’m talking about these things in a purely non-sexual way, of course. Men cover their penis area. There seems to be, at least within my understanding, some issues with guys there too. Obviously, I’m not a guy, so I don’t really know what those issues are. In general I think it is fair to say that most Americans are uncomfortable with nakedness. Either way, I’m not saying that we should or should not cover our bodies; I’m saying that there might be a link between covering and not covering the body and some sort of shame/oversexualization.

On the contrary, maybe there is another reason, such as culture, that causes people in America to be ashamed of their bodies.

    What do you think?

Disclaimer: This was not meant to offend anyone. I definitely support wearing hijaab/modest clothing.

  • Growing up, what did you dream of doing or becoming as an adult? What do you dream of doing now?

The first job I really remember wanting to do was a nurse. I’m not sure if it’s because people told me that they thought I would make a good one, or because I actually wanted to be one. *shrug* Then it progressed to wanting to be a vegan baker. That was when I started to want to do something that meant something to me; something that I felt proud supporting. Well, I realized that it wasn’t for me for multiple reasons. I don’t think I can pinpoint the actual first moment that I decided that I want to be an English teacher. I guess I tried to think about what else I felt like I enjoyed/felt strongly for. And, of course, all the stuff that I’ve written about (my amazing teachers and being invited to take AP lit :D ) kind of solidified my decision :) .

So it goes. (Kudos if you get the allusion).
